Did you know that each timeless design element on Latvian Mittens has a meaning? Usually symbolic of the cycles of life, earth, and heaven. The oldest mittens ever found were Latvian Mittens, 10 centuries old. This the picture is of Maryly’s Latvian grandparents, and Dad and all their Latvian friends!

This workshop will focus on cuff design and how to make this mitten UNIQUELY yours. I will show you many different cuff treatments such a fringe, lacy scalloped edge, twisted edges and variations of Latvian Braid. It is very important to the Latvian knitter that their mitten be one of a kind through color and pattern choice. And yes, there will be lots of color!

The mitten pattern itself will be a fairly easy popular repeat pattern and one you will be able to finish on your own, but if you need me I will return to Romney Ridge Yarns & Wool in Ipswich, MA for a second short workshop.

  • Level: Beginner/Intermediate. You can knit on double point needles.

  • We provide: Instruction and 6- 50 yard skeins of Romney Ridge Farm Blend Yarn

  • You bring: 5 -size 3 double point needles.

  • Class length: 6 hours total with a 1 hour lunch break.
